THE NOSE, AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT TO GOOD HEALTH!
1) A VITAL FUNCTION: BREATHING
Point where air enters the body, the nose heats and humidifies the dry and cold air from the outside to make it breathable by the lungs.
2) A PROTECTION/DEFENSE MECHANISM: FILTRATION
First barrier of the body against external agressors: viruses, cigarette smoke, pollution, allergens…
The nasal mucosa, a hot and humid layer which heats and humidifies the air, is essential for the nose to properly fulfil its role. It is made up of mucus and vibratory cilia which serve as a protective filter. The mucus catches viruses or other particles and the vibratory cilia evacuate them, either through the nose when blowing or by the pharynx.
3) OLFACTORY FUNCTION
The nose is also an olfactory organ. Smells are perceived through the nose, before the information is sent to the brain, where various fragrances are recognised and interpreted; along with taste sensations. Taste comes from cells on the tongue but the fine perception of aromas and flavours is managed by the nose.
4) THE NOSE, ESSENTIAL FOR COMMUNICATING
Finally, the nose helps us to understand. With the sinuses, it plays the role of sound box which modifies the sounds we produce when we talk. This is why it is easy to notice someone has a blocked nose when one talks and why this sensation is so unpleasant on a daily basis.
